Abstract Original Research
introduction : Pornography is a common problem among different groups, especially adolescents and young adults, and its negative consequences have been examined across various domains. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate frontal alpha brain waves in individuals with pornography addiction in comparison with normal individuals.
Methods: The present research is a causal–comparative study. The statistical population included all men aged 18 to 35 years with pornography addiction in the city of Urmia during the spring and summer of 2023. Initially, through screening and filtering procedures, participants were recruited via a public call announced on virtual platforms and social networks (Instagram), university environments, and counseling groups affiliated with the Urmia Welfare Organization. A total of 36 individuals with the highest frequency of pornography use based on the Pornography Craving Questionnaire developed by Kerr et al. (2014), along with 36 normal individuals, were selected through purposive sampling. Their brain waves were recorded using quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG). The collected data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) with SPSS 19.
Results: The results indicated a significant difference between the two groups at FP1 (P < 0.05) and FP2 (P < 0.05), with higher scores observed in the normal group. However, no significant differences were found between the two groups at F3, F4, F7, and F8 (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that pornography addiction leads to abnormalities in brain wave patterns, resulting in differences in regions such as FP1 and FP2. These results may encourage researchers to conduct further related studies in the future.
