Abstract
Original Research
introduction :
This systematic review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the neural mechanisms of neuroplasticity and its clinical applications in cognitive rehabilitation across neurological conditions.
Methods:
A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for studies published between 2010 and 2024. Experimental studies, clinical trials, and case-based investigations examining neuroplastic mechanisms and cognitive rehabilitation outcomes were included. After screening and eligibility assessment, 48 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final synthesis
Results:
The reviewed evidence indicates that neuroplasticity is a core mechanism underlying cognitive recovery in neurological conditions such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, and selected psychiatric conditions. Mechanistically, cognitive rehabilitation interventions were associated with synaptic strengthening, functional reorganization of cortical networks, and modulation of neural connectivity. Clinically, interventions including structured cognitive training, non-invasive brain stimulation, and neurofeedback demonstrated improvements in attention, memory, executive functioning, and overall cognitive performance.
Conclusion:
: Neuroplasticity represents a fundamental mechanism supporting the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation. Targeting neuroplastic processes through personalized and multimodal interventions can lead to meaningful cognitive and functional improvements, thereby enhancing patients’ quality of life. These findings underscore the clinical value of neuroplasticity-based rehabilitation approaches and highlight the need for future research to identify optimal intervention protocols and patient-specific predictors of treatment response.
