Abstract Original Research
introduction : This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the Mind Simulation Method (MSM) as a complementary neuro-behavioral intervention for reducing symptom severity in children and adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Methods: A clinical case series was conducted with 30 children and adolescents with ASD (16 boys, 14 girls), aged 7-16 years, who presented at the "Zehn & Ravan" Psychology Services Center. All participants had been diagnosed with severe ASD, presenting persistent communicative and attentional deficits since early childhood, and showed limited progress with conventional pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments. The intervention protocol included: (1) Baseline assessment using the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale–Second Edition (GARS-2; initial mean score: 85). (2) Serial Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) assessments at 30-day intervals. (3) Monthly psychiatric interviews accompanied by GARS-2 re-evaluation. (4) Bi-weekly sessions with a clinical psychologist. (5) Daily access to a therapist, including regular video recordings to document progress. The MSM, grounded in neuro-behavioral principles, involves simulating real-life activities in a simplified, structured, and low-stimulus controlled environment to enhance learning and focus.
Results: After 90 days of intervention, QEEG data indicated significant neurophysiological improvements. Notable normalization was observed in frontal and central regions (FZ, CZ, C3, C4), particularly in Delta, Beta1, Alpha, and Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) wave activities. Concurrently, a marked reduction in ASD symptom severity was recorded, with the mean GARS-2 score decreasing from 85 to 45. Clinical evaluations corroborated these findings, reporting observable improvements in attentional control, compliance with instructions, production of two-word phrases, and the ability to follow basic verbal requests.
Conclusion: The findings from this case series suggest that the Mind Simulation Method (MSM) may serve as a potent complementary intervention for children and adolescents with severe ASD. It is associated with significant neurophysiological regulation and concomitant functional behavioral gains. Further controlled trials are warranted to validate these preliminary results and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
