Abstract Original Research
introduction : The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on symptom severity and cognitive functioning in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Methods: This applied study employed a quasi-experimental, single-group pretest-posttest design. The study population consisted of individuals diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder based on the diagnostic criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Fifteen participants were selected using convenience sampling. Data collection instruments included the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale and cognitive functioning assessment tests administered through the Rahakam software. Participants received 20 sessions of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, with six sessions per week. Low-frequency stimulation was applied to the supplementary motor area and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, while high-frequency stimulation was applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The data were analyzed using the paired-samples t-test.
Results: The results showed that the mean score of obsessive-compulsive symptoms significantly decreased at the posttest stage compared with the pretest stage (p < 0.001). This finding indicates a reduction in the severity of obsessive-compulsive symptoms following the repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation intervention. In addition, changes in cognitive functioning and brain activity were examined at the pretest and posttest stages.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation may be considered as an adjunctive intervention for reducing the severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms. Given the network-based nature of obsessive-compulsive disorder and the role of prefrontal and supplementary motor regions in the regulation of cognitive processes and control of repetitive behaviors, the use of targeted brain stimulation protocols may provide an appropriate basis for improving symptoms and investigating neural changes associated with this disorder. However, due to the limited sample size and the absence of a control group, the generalizability of the findings requires further controlled studies with larger sample sizes.
