Abstract Original Research
introduction : Numerous studies have examined the role of personality traits and brain-region size in episodic memory; however, the interactive role of personality traits in episodic memory and its neural underpinnings has received less attention. The present study aims to investigate the interactive role of personality profiles based on the two dimensions of Openness to Experience(O) and Extraversion(E) on episodic memory performance and its neural correlates.
Methods: Data were extracted from healthy young adults in the Human Connectome Project( HCP). We used scores on the O and E dimensions from the NEO-FFI questionnaire to identify personality profiles through k-means clustering, and we applied the Calinski-Harabasz criterion in both female and male groups. Verbal episodic memory was assessed using the Penn Word Memory Test (PWMT). A permutation t-test was used to compare the performance of personality clusters on the PWMT. Then, within each cluster, the correlation between PWMT performance and structural brain indices( cortical thickness, surface area, and volume) was examined exploratorily, without a prior hypothesis for selecting brain regions.
Results: In both female and male groups, three personality profiles were identified. A significant difference in PWMT performance was observed only in the female group, in comparisons between profiles; specifically, the High E/High O group showed better performance than both the Low O/Low E and High E/Low O groups. Regarding neural correlates in the female group: in the Low O/Low E profile (n=193), episodic memory performance showed a significant positive correlation with right inferior lateral ventricle volume and significant negative correlations with cortical thickness of the bilateral cuneus. In the High E/Low O profile (n=255), the strongest associations were significant positive correlations with bilateral superior parietal cortical area, along with rostral middle frontal cortical area. In the High E/High O profile (n=201), memory performance was significantly and negatively correlated with optic chiasm volume and left precuneus cortical area, reflecting a pattern centered on the precuneus-cingulate network. Overall, each personality profile was associated with a distinct pattern of brain-memory structural correlations, primarily involving parietal-occipital, limbic, and subcortical regions.
Conclusion: These findings indicate that the interaction between Openness to Experience and Extraversion, across both sexes, gives rise to distinct patterns of association between brain structure and episodic memory. In women, each personality profile was correlated with a distinct network of parietal-occipital, limbic, and subcortical regions. These results highlight the importance of examining composite personality profiles, rather than isolated dimensions, in neuroscientific studies of memory.
