Abstract Original Research
introduction : The menstrual cycle is a series of hormonal and physiological changes that prepare the female body for pregnancy while also influencing brain function, cognitive processing, and emotion regulation. Investigating the effect of these fluctuations on brain activities related to reactions to negative emotional stimuli, particularly in different frequency bands, requires further investigation, and despite its importance, little research has been conducted to design interventions such as neurofeedback to modulate these effects.
Methods: In this study, 17 women with regular menstrual cycles were shown unpleasant video clips during two stages of the cycle, and EEG was recorded from various brain regions.
Results: TopoMap analysis of the relative power of the bands revealed that in the luteal phase, delta and beta activity increased, particularly in the frontal and temporal regions, whereas in the follicular phase, alpha and gamma activity increased in the occipital and central regions, indicating physiological changes affecting emotion regulation throughout the cycle. Then, the most effective features were determined with the Xie–Beni index; such that the relative power of low beta in FPz, its combination in FPz and FP2, and the combination of low beta, alpha, and gamma in FPz, F3, and FP2 showed the highest power to separate the two-phase EEG signals.
Conclusion: The obtained results confirmed the effect of the menstrual cycle on the women’s brain activity patterns. Accordingly, some neurofeedback protocols were proposed with the aim of modulating hyperarousal in the luteal phase.
